Fiber Composite Technology

Fiber Reinforced Plastic Repair Training (Qualification to FRP-Remanufacturer)

Fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs) play a key role in lightweight design. Qualified personnel are a must in order to properly use these materials and fully exploit their innovative properties. These employees must be familiar with the special features of FRPs and have knowledge of manufacturing methods.

One week course covering FRP maintenance, machining, and repair

An FRP is manufactured from a number of components. The chosen components and manufacturing method have a major influence on the properties of the resulting product. Fraunhofer IFAM offers the one week FRP-Remanufacturer course to train employees to maintain, machine, and repair FRP structures.

Fundamental principles

The course starts by covering the fundamentals of fiber reinforced plastics (FRPs). Participants learn about the special features of these materials. Points which must be specially heeded when repairing and maintaining fiber reinforced plastics are also covered.

Materials

This section of the course provides participants with information about the various components of fiber composites (fibers, matrix materials, core materials, fillers) which must be used when carrying out repairs and their effects on subsequent component properties.

Repair methods

Effective repair is a prerequisite for subsequently using the repaired components. The participants are introduced to the principles of repair techniques. Besides the necessary preliminary work, various strategies for repairing fiber composite components are introduced and practical assignments are carried out. In addition, the identification and prevention of errors and defects are discussed.

Quality assurance

This section of the training course covers relevant quality assurance measures when repairing fiber reinforced plastics. This includes correct storage and processing of raw materials and also effective surface pretreatment to realize high-quality repairs.

Health and safety at work and environmental protection

Safety measures to be taken when working with fibers and plastics, and regarding the auxiliary materials which are used in repair and manufacturing processes, are discussed. The proper use of work equipment and protective equipment is also covered.

Employees in companies that in their professional practice independently maintain, repair and process fiber composite plastics according to work instructions. In particular, the course is aimed at those interested in rail vehicle construction.

After successfully completing the further training, the participants are able to manufacture, process and repair high-quality fiber composite structures using manual processes.
