Solar Energy Engineering | Master of Science (M.Sc.)

Expertise in solar energy

The Master's degree programme in Solar Energy Engineering is the ideal choice for anyone interested in a career in the solar energy industry. The programme provides the specialist knowledge required for the development, construction and operation of solar energy systems.

The scientific expertise that goes into the course content comes from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE.

After completing this program, you will be able to...

... gain a qualitative and global understanding of current and future energy requirements.

... acquire knowledge about the physics of solar cells, the integration of renewable energies into the power grid and the basics of storage applications.

... develop and design solar cells, photovoltaic modules, off-grid and grid-connected photovoltaic systems, solar thermal collectors and heat storage systems.

... optimise and analyse photovoltaic systems, components and power plants, taking into account innovation, efficiency, costs and service life.

... evaluate new and emerging solar cell and solar collector technologies.

... write your scientific work in the form of a Master's thesis.

... collaborate, engage, share and be confident in an international digital environment.

content overview

The content of the Master's degree programme "M.Sc. Solar Energy Engineering" ranges from the development and design of solar systems to their production and the professional construction of photovoltaic and solar thermal systems.

Students are taught the physical, mathematical and electrotechnical fundamentals of solar energy in preparatory modules.

The main element of the programme consists of three compulsory modules, which provide a comprehensive overview of the physics and technologies of solar cells, photovoltaic systems and solar thermal energy and cover the entire production chain of crystalline silicon solar modules, which dominate the market.

In various elective modules, participants can set individual priorities, for example in the subject areas of "solar cell technologies", "characterisation and modelling", "photovoltaic systems and grid integration" or "solar thermal energy"
