Lightweight Professional

LightRight: Materials for lightweight design – how to treat them right

Corona has not only stopped our lives. It also forces us to re-conceptualise professional training, because there is no question that face-to-face events - at least in an international context - will not be possible in the foreseeable future.

That is why the original blended learning format of the course is being transformed into the lightweight professional online for you!

We have reorganised the modules of the lightweight professional as follows:

The teaching-learning content is currently being completely reworked for self-study independent of time and location, which is only interrupted by a few virtual meetings with the tutor to answer questions and make contexts more transparent. At the end of the course there is an online exam, which is prepared by an intensive three-day repetition of the learning content. The dates of the respective virtual attendance phases can be found in the description of the respective module under »dates and registration«.

In order to give you an idea of what to expect in this training course, you can already take a look at the »Introductory Module« and the advanced module »Fiber Reinforced Plastics«.  After the registration you will receive your access data and all further information.

Required knowledge for participation on the training course

The courses are aimed at employees in industry whose work involves planning the manufacture of lightweight products, and at employees in companies that want to start manufacturing lightweight products.

Objectives of the training course

Participants will be able to identify and differentiate the steps involved in developing lightweight products, and to use (design, construct and set up processes with) specific lightweight material in the correct way to fully utilize the lightweight potential.

Course overview

Type of course E-learning course
Target group Managers, engineers as well as technical staff.
Transversal modules are targeted at technical specialists.
Objectives You will be able to identify and differentiate the steps involved in developing lightweight products, and to design, construct and set up processes with specific lightweight material in the correct way to fully utilize the lightweight potential.
Prerequisites The courses are aimed at employees in industry whose work involves planning the manufacture of lightweight products, and at employees in companies that want to start manufacturing lightweight products.
Course Duration The scope of this training is based on a 40-hour classroom course. The e-learning format includes learning materials and videos for self-study independent of time and place, learning controls for self-assessment of learning progress and online tutorials. The actual exam preparation takes place online on three consecutive days (see module dates), which are directly followed by the online exam.
Language of instruction English
Course contents Lightweight construction guidelines, lightweight materials, cost- and life cycle –assessment methodologies, specialized instruction on different lightweight materials and additional transversal perspectives to the lightweight materials
How the course is organized T-shaped professional structure. Introductory module (basic level), material modules (advanced level) and transversal modules (expert level)
Certification The certification program Lightweight Professional follows the requirements of ISO EN17024. The personnel certificates confirm that successful courses participants have acquired expertise and practical knowledge in the relevant area.
Certification requirements Basic level: participation in the introductory module and successful examination
Advanced level: participation at least in four material modules and successful examinations
Expert level: participation at least in four transversal modules and successful examinations

Additional information
You can book all modules individually and independently from the certification procedure.

Introductory Module

You will learn how to identify and differentiate the crucial steps for the development of a lightweight product, from the initial requirement list and the general solutions to the overall design and product documentation.

After successful completion of the basic level "Introductory Module" (IM) of the lightweight professional training courses, participants are able to:

  • Identify and differentiate the different steps in the process to develop a product in order to critically assess the advantages and disadvantages of lightweight design for specific cases and different materials.
  • Identify company key figures and components to develop products using lightweight approach (designers, buyers, quality personal…)

Course content

  • Environmental impact of lightweight construction: socio-political background, governmental (European) strategies, ecobalance, need for recycling and circular economy, marketing issues
  • Definition of Lightweight design and strategies, design process
  • Construction guidelines in lightweight product development
  • Materials knowledge related to properties and processes
  • Health and safety issues
  • Manufacturing specifics, cost-value ratio
  • Supply chain: definition of criteria to identify reliable suppliers
  • Planning and management
